From pre-bid to post-punchlist, full guidance for concrete floor projects is wrapped up in SSPC’s newly revised Technology Guide 20: Guide for Applying Thick Film Coatings and Surfacings over Concrete Floors.

SSPC Technology Guide 20, released this month, is a major revision and reorganization of the similarly titled SSPC-TU 10 Technology Update. The reorganization incorporates many elements of the former TU appendices into the body of the guide.

Topics and Focus

SSPC Technology Guide 20 is organized in the same way that a flooring installation project would progress.

Elite Concrete Restoration

SSPC Technology Guide 20, Guide for Applying Thick Film Coatings and Surfacings over Concrete Floors, is a major revision of SSPC-TU 10.

Topics include:

  • General guidance for contractors on performing a pre-bid evaluation of newly installed concrete substrates or conducting a condition survey for replacement or maintenance projects;
  • Considerations for selecting surfacings based on service environment;
  • Guidance for moisture evaluation;
  • General surface preparation and contaminant removal;
  • Recommendations for preparation and successful installation of various generic types of flooring systems; and
  • A new checklist to aid contractors in developing work plans for specific projects.
ICS Coatings

SSPC says the guide is geared toward contractors but may also benefit specifiers.

The guide is geared toward flooring and surfacing contractors but would also be useful for specifiers who need a general introduction to flooring installation considerations and procedures, according to SSPC.

Relevant Standards

The guide is relevant to these standards, according to SSPC:

  • PA 9, DFT measurement using ultrasonic gages;
  • PA 14, Field application of polyurea and polyurethane coatings to concrete and steel;
  • Paint 44, Coatings for Wastewater Facilities;
  • TR 5 / ICRI Guideline 03741 / NACE 02203, Design, Installation and Maintenance of Protective Polymer Flooring Systems for Concrete;
  • TU 2 / NACE 6G197, Design, Installation and Maintenance of Concrete Used in Secondary Containment; and
  • SSPC-SP 13/NACE No. 6, Surface Preparation of Concrete.

The guide was developed by SSPC's Committee C.7.1, Coatings and Floorings for Concrete, chaired by Thomas J.Murphy of ATC Epoxy.
