Three prominent architects experienced in aesthetics and building performance will judge the first Student Design Competition at the D+D 2014 Conference and Exhibition next month in Cincinnati, OH.

The competition challenges University of Cincinnati architecture students to design a durable, sustainable re-clad of the Terrace Plaza Hotel, a Modernist icon built in 1946-48.

Judges

The first D+D Student Design Competition will be judged by (from left) Steven Danielpour, Vincent Cammalleri, and Richard Rauh. The architects will also present papers during the D+D 2014 Conference, which runs May 20-22.

The contest will be judged by:

  • Steven Danielpour, the director of firm-wide specifications for HOK Architecture;
  • Vincent Cammalleri, a senior principal architect with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (New York, NY); and
  • Richard Rauh, principal architect, Richard Rauh and Associates (Atlanta, GA).

The winner of the contest will receive $2,500 and will be announced at noon May 22, the last day of the three-day conference.

The competition, sponsored by Dow, will focus on the importance of materials technology.

Built in 1946-48, the 20-story Terrace Plaza Hotel in downtown Cincinnati is clad in red clay brick. The building's skin is the focus of the re-design competition.

The competition judges will also present technical papers during the conference, an event designed to unite specifiers, architects, contractors and building owners through their shared interest in building performance and aesthetics.
