Dow Bows Two Paint Innovations

More items for Coatings Technology

Dow Coating Materials has introduced two new polymer technologies: one designed to tackle an indoor air pollutant; the other, household stains.

The innovations—unveiled during the American Coatings Show this month in Atlanta—are a new binder reported to offer active formaldehyde removal from ambient air and a binder with stain-beading technology to make cleaning walls easier.

Formaldehyde-Removing Binder

Dow bills FORMASHIELD 12 100% Acrylic Binder as a “first of its kind” waterborne product that removes free-flowing formaldehyde from the air when painted on walls in a home or commercial space.

Dow says its FORMASHIELD 12 100% Acrylic Binder actively removes formaldehyde from indoor air when painted on walls.

Dow’s scientists say the technology works by reacting with formaldehyde, transforming the potentially harmful carcinogen into an inert and harmless vapor.

The aqueous all-acrylic emulsion polymer technology is designed for use in premium interior paints and can be formulated for ultra-low-VOC products, the company says.

Dow says the product is also low odor and offers good washability and adhesion.

Stain-Beading Formulation

Dow also introduced RHOPLEX EZ Clean 1500 Acrylic Emulsion, a binder with advanced stain-beading technology designed to tackle common hydrophobic (water repellent) and hydrophilic (water attracting) household stains.

The 100% acrylic binder also offers repellency over porous substrates and scrub resistance, the company says.

It is formulated for use in premium flat and satin wall paints and can be formulated for use in low-VOC paints.

Dow Coating Materials is an operating business of The Dow Chemical Company, of Midland, MI.

Exactly what “inert and harmless vapor” is this product producing?

Comment from Paul Doll, (4/22/2014, 10:12 PM)

Tom, when the formaldehyde covalently bonds with the functionality built into the FORMASHIELD polymer backbone, water vapor is created. It is a mimimal amount (sub-ppm) so it is just water vapor and not liquid water [ie no need to worry about wet walls]. More details can be found at http://coatings.dow.com/en/products/formashield

Okay, so the product has available reaction sites and bonds with the formaldehyde, releasing water. Neat. In a typical bedroom (for example) where roughly 500 square feet of the paint is applied at 1 mil DFT, how much formaldehyde can we expect it to absorb before effectively using up all of the active sites?

So my Sherwin Williams rep says their Harmony paint has done the same for years - what's the difference?
