3 Architects Win AkzoNobel Design Prize

Three young architects are being honored for Brazilian projects that focus on renewable materials in a new awards program sponsored by AkzoNobel.

The winners of the inaugural AkzoNobel Architecture Prize, selected from 95 entries, were announced March 11 at a ceremony in São Paulo, Brazil.

The three architects were honored March 11 at a ceremony in São Paulo. AkzoNobel and the Tomie Ohtake Institute designed the award program to help develop the careers of young architects.

The winners will embark on architectural research trips to China, Russia, and Mexico as part of their prize. They will also visit Amsterdam, The Netherlands, AkzoNobel’s headquarters, according to the company.

3 Winners

The first prize was awarded to Fernando Forte, FGMF Architects, for Casa Grelha (Grid House) in São José dos Campos city, São Paulo.

The elevated, one-story home was built around a structural grid and is surrounded by hills, trees and large stones, according to project details via Arch Daily. Grid House was completed in 2007.

Juan Pablo Rosenberg, of AR Architects, was awarded second place for Casa dos Pátios (Courtyard House) in São Paulo city, São Paulo. The modern design features abundant natural light and wood finishes.

The third prize was awarded to Alexandro Prisco, AP Architecture and Urbanism, for Commons Studio Bar, in Salvador city, Bahia state. The eco-friendly multi-platform event space opened its doors in 2013. The project combines beauty with functionality to create a safe, enjoyable quality sound space, according to project details via Facebook.

Award Details

Developed in partnership with the Tomie Ohtake Institute, the awards program was designed to help develop the careers of young architects, according to AkzoNobel.

Founded in 2001, the Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to the research and distribution of visual arts, design and architecture.

The Institute will exhibit the work of the contest’s top 12 finalists.
