Tower Design Offers a Whole New Spin

Now, here’s architecture that will really move you.

Italian architect David Fisher calls it “dynamic architecture”—dynamic, as in movingand is proposing a 78-floor tower that does just that in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Each floor in the so-called 1,027-foot-high Da Vinci Tower would rotate independently, with one full rotation in 90 minutes, creating a structure whose shape changes constantly, Fisher says.

Solar panels and wind turbines between each floor would generate enough power for the 78-floor Da Vinci Tower and five other buildings, the architect says. Only the building core would be constructed on site.

The entire 78-floor structure would be self-powered by 77 wind turbines positioned horizontally between each rotating floor.

The turbines, augmented by solar panels, would generate up to 1.2 million kilowatt-hours of energy—enough to power the tower and five other buildings in the area, Fisher's firm, Dynamic Architecture, says in a video presentation.

The firm says the design represents "a new era in architecture."

Building in 4D

"Life is movement," Fisher's video says. "It's about keeping up with time, with changing of the seasons."

Time is "our best architect," the video says. "If your life travels through time, you need a home which travels accordingly."

DaVinci Tower

The DaVinci Tower would be built with prefabricated techniques. The concrete core would be erected on site, with the luxury units produced in a factory, shipped to the site, and then installed.

The promise: "In our buildings, you can have breakfast facing sunrise and dinner in front of a sunset over the ocean without moving from your room."

The firm calls this "a building in four dimensions."

Prefab Construction

The skyscraper would be the first built with prefabricated techniques, the firm says. Only the concrete core would be built on site; the other 90 percent (all of the building's luxury units) will be produced in a factory and shipped to the site, to allow the building to be erected in just 18 months, the firm says.

Each floor would take just six days to complete, rather than the six weeks required for a conventional project, the designer says.

In all, the prefab method will save 23 percent in construction costs compared to comparable conventional skyscrapers and would require only 90 works at the construction site, according to the firm.

Getting Started

Dynamic Architecture envisions the Dubai project as the first of a series, with other dynamic skyscrapers planned for London, Paris, Moscow and New York. A "dynamic hotel" is also touted on the firm's site.

However, there is no indication from the firm that any of the projects is underway. The firm's video presentation was uploaded to YouTube in 2008, and the company did not respond Tuesday (March 11) to questions about the projects' current status.
