After receiving federal favor for its green-building rating system, the Green Building Initiative has named a veteran sustainability advocate to serve as its next president.

Jerry Yudelson will “accelerate growth” of the Portland, OR-based non-profit’s green-building assessment tools, including its Green Globes rating system, GBI said in announcing the appointment Monday (Jan. 6).

"After many years promoting the advancement of green building and market transformation in the building industry, I'm pleased to be asked to lead the GBI at this key time in its development," said Jerry Yudelson.

Last October, the U.S. General Services Administration ranked GBI's Green Globes system in line with the U.S. Green Building Council’s long-time front runner, LEED, in its recommendation.

Formerly the president of Yudelson Associates in Tucson, AZ, Yudelson has authored 13 books on green building; achieved recognition as a LEED Fellow; and chaired the steering committee for Greenbuild, the country's largest annual green building show, which he helped grow during its first eight years.

Responsible for Growth

As president of GBI, Yudelson will be responsible the growth, continued development, expansion and marketing of the Green Globes rating system.

GBI's Green Globes was established in 2000 as an online assessment and rating tool in Canada. Developers call the system an "affordable alternative to LEED."

His role will also include expanding understanding and use of GBI's other assessment tools, such as the Guiding Principles Compliance tool, which is designed to help federal agencies comply with President Obama's green government requirements.

"After many years promoting the advancement of green building and market transformation in the building industry, I'm pleased to be asked to lead the GBI at this key time in its development," said Yudelson.

Yudelson is a professional engineer and an engineering graduate of Caltech and Harvard University. He holds an MBA from the University of Oregon and is a National Peer Professional with the U.S. General Services Administration.
