Session: Decorative Coating Materials and Methods

The presentation will describe recent trends in decoration and restoration in buildings of historic, architectural, and religious significance. In the current economy, traditional products and innovative strategies must combine to meet each client's ever-present goal of beauty on a budget. Several recent case studies will be presented for projects which have combined time-tested materials and techniques with state-of-the-art technology and environmentally sensitive products to achieve outstanding results.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to differentiate between new and traditional products used in interior decoration.
  • Participants will be able to recognize the pros and cons of using these materials to design and execute a decorative interior.
  • Participants will understand what questions to ask and what factors to consider when choosing materials and methods for an interior decoration or restoration.
  • Participants will examine current trends in client participation and priorities when developing an interior decorative scheme.

  • Speaker Bio:

    Gunar Gruenke, vice-president of Conrad Schmitt Studios, has provided art direction and management for more than 80 projects in the years since he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a background in art and business. He began his hands-on art education at an early age, on the studio benches and jobsites, under the tutelage of his grandfather, Bernard O. Gruenke, both nationally recognized ecclesiastical artists. He is an expert in interior finishes and techniques and methods of conservation. Gruenke has spoken on television news programs and has been published in national periodicals such as Church Executive. He has addressed audiences including the Restoration & Renovation Conference, the NeoCon World’s Trade Fair, the Paint and Coatings Expo (PACE), and is the current president of the Stained Glass Association of America.
