How many times can a building be repainted before the paint becomes too thick to perform properly?

     Pretty vague question, so I'll go with a generalist answer. It can be repainted until the original coating loses adhesion with the substrate, or the stresses in the overall system overcome the cohesive strength of the full system, i.e.,  until it starts to peel, crack, flake, et cetera. This will vary hugely, depending on the substrate, coating types, thicknesses per coat, frequency of coating...

     The substrate, service, and environment need to be defined along with the coating type before the question can begin to be answered.

     I would think it would depend on the surface, sand finish stucco vs tilt-up concrete vs wood, and the thickness of the coatings.
