Cortec Corp. has introduced a new sealer designed to penetrate the smallest pores of the densest concrete structures without altering their appearance.

Cortec's MCI-2019 W is formulated to protect new and existing commercial buildings, parking decks, and other commercial and industrial concrete structures from moisture intrusion, freeze/thaw scaling, and chloride-ion (salt) intrusion.

Formulated with Cortec's Migrating Corrosion Inhibitor (MCI) technology, single-component MCI-2019 W is a patented, VOC-compliant, clear sealer composed of a stable 40 percent alkylalkoxy silane emulsion in water.

How it Works

The product penetrates dense concrete structures and provides water repellency by chemically reacting with the cementitious substrate, according to Cortec, a St. Paul, MN-based developer of corrosion protection technology.

Cortec's MCI-2019 W penetrating sealer is made for use on commercial and industrial concrete structures.

The product "seeks out embedded steel-reinforcing bars to form a protective, monomolecular corrosion-inhibiting coating," the company says.

Treated substrates are hydrophobic and retain their original appearance. The product is also available as MCI-2019 W FD, with a fugitive dye to aid in applications.

According to Cortec, MCI-2019 W can extend the life of all reinforced concrete structures and reduces further corrosion of rusted metals.

The product can be applied by spray, roller, squeegee or paint brush to any concrete surface and penetrates the smallest concrete pores, Cortec says.

The company says MCI-2019 W:

  • Enhances the durability of reinforced concrete;
  • Increases surface abrasion resistance;
  • Blocks carbonation and chloride ion intrusion;
  • Allows concrete to breathe and vapor to diffuse;
  • Helps protect against acid, alkali and chemical attack; and
  • Resists blushing, peeling and yellowing.
