A new exhibit in New York City will offer a unique look into the daily studio practice of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano.

The architect’s body of work spans the globe—from the New York Times Building in New York City to the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center in New Caledonia, France, and the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome.

"Fragments" will showcase the stories of 24 Renzo Piano projects.

The exhibit, called “Fragments,” opens Thursday (June 27) and runs through Tuesday (Aug. 2) at the Gagosian Gallery. It will feature more than 30 years of architectural projects by Renzo Piano Building Workshop.

Workshop architects will be on hand to speak about the works throughout the exhibit.

For more information or to RSVP, contact the gallery at newyork@gagosian.com or 212-741-1717.

Space is limited, and priority will be given to architecture and design students, according to the organizers.

Stories of 24 Projects

The display features the stories of 24 projects told through models, drawings, photographs and videos, the organizers said.

In 2002, Renzo Piano designed the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, Italy, a multi-functionial public music complex.

Among the projects showcased are Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; The Menil Collection, Houston; Kansai International Airport, Osaka; Fondation Beyeler, Basel; Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center, Nouméa, New Caledonia; The New York Times Building, New York; Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Athens; and the Whitney Museum’s new building in downtown Manhattan.

A complete list and description of all exhibited projects will be available at the exhibit.

About Piano

Born in 1937 into a family of builders, Piano connects his coastal upbringing in Genoa, Italy, to the evolution of certain constants in his architecture: “an obsession with light and its effect on the dynamic potential of built space,” according to the gallery.

The Itailian architect has been recognized for his ability to weave buildings into their natural surroundings. His portfolio includes the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center in Noumea, New Caledonia, France.

Piano founded the Renzo Piano Building Workshop in 1981. Today, a team of about 150 people work with the Italian architect at his Paris, Genoa, and New York offices.

The firm has become renowned for some of the most innovative architectural projects of the past three decades, the gallery said. Recent projects include The Shard in London and the Centro de Arte Botin in Spain.

The event reflects a collaboration by the workshop, the Gagosian Gallery, and the Fondazione Renzo Piano, a non-profit organization established to conserve materials related to Piano’s work. The exhibit is supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, organizers say.
