Designers looking for an edible element to incorporate into their creations might consider a hardtack table, chocolate chair, grains sofa, or candy coffee table.

A new line of (partially) edible furniture offers much-needed nutrients in a time of crisis, according to the Italian and Singaporean design firm Lanzavecchia + Wai.

“The decorational elements that were once appreciated, suddenly become superfluous and should evolve to reflect a new era of austerity; the objects become edible and offer themselves to be consumed when needed,” the firm says.

Called “Austerity,” the line features iron structures finished with carbohydrates, proteins, sugar and chocolate (or “food reserves”). For example, the sofa has a backrest made from rice bricks and cotton quilt of dried beans.

Hungry? This sofa has a backrest made from rice bricks and cotton quilt of dried beans, the firm says.

And so, if furniture can react to times of crisis, paint may be next.

Are you ready to lick the walls?
