A new Florida-based coating maker has unveiled Serenity, billed as the “highest-performing sound-reduction coating on the market.”

Serenity is a two-step coating system designed to “dramatically” reduce ambient and outside noise, according to manufacturer 360° Coatings.

The spray-applied system, consisting of a base coat and finish coat, can be used on drywall, plaster, trim, ceilings and walls.

The product is designed for drywall, plaster, trim, ceilings and walls.

“With just one application of Serenity, sound reduction of 60% is achieved,” 360° Coatings says. “SRT (Sound Reduction Technology) quiets rooms by reducing sound transfer.”

How it Works

Serenity’s Base Coat is applied in two coats. The odorless formula usually dries in less than an hour, although low temperatures or higher humidity will lengthen drying times, the manufacturer says.

Serenity Finish Coat “creates a paintable, neutral white surface” in one odorless coat that also dries quickly, the manufacturer says.

Both coatings “[form] nano membranes that create sound-absorbing and sound-deflecting barriers,” the manufacturer says. The “patented resilient layers … are scientifically formulated to absorb and deflect sound transmission with a 52 STC [Sound Transmission Class] rating.”

The Finish Coat is also available in 12 colors as well as textures and custom tints for direct application over the base coat.

Serenity is designed to be mold- and mildew-proof and to seal in mold, mildew and lead, the company’s website reports.

The system, with Base and Finish/Designer Coats, reduces sound throughout the frequency spectrum, a product video reports.

The system costs about $3 per square foot, which the coating maker says is about half the price of alternative sound reduction systems.

Testing and Performance

360° Coatings says Serenity has been subject to third-party testing.

“Independent lab tests at Riverbank Acoustical Laboratories confirm consistent sound reduction throughout the entire frequency spectrum, with mid- and high-range frequencies showing proven sound reduction and an STC rating of 52,” the coating maker’s website says.

Noting the growth of insulating thermal coatings, 360° Coatings CEO David Rairick calls functional coatings like Serenity “the future of non-invasive construction.”

“Never before in the history of acoustics has there been a sound-blocking technology that doesn’t require an invasive retrofit, is water-soluble and sustainable because there is no waste associated with the product’s application,” said Rairick.

Serenity is one of the first products developed by specialty coatings maker 360° Coatings, of Naples, FL.
