U.S. coating makers will coordinate their wide-ranging sustainability initiatives under one green umbrella with the formation of a new Sustainability Workgroup.

The new panel will "address a number of emerging issues in the area of sustainability" and coordinate the American Coatings Association's efforts "in response to overwhelming interest from its membership," ACA announced recently.

The new committee's membership has not been announced. The first meeting will be this month, ACA said.

"The topic of sustainability has been steadily growing in importance, and has quickly become not only a socially and environmentally progressive movement, but also a potentially important economic driver as well," ACA said.

The new panel will wrap in several ACA initiatives, including green building issues.

Green Initiatives

ACA says it has "incorporated the philosophy of sustainability into many of its existing programs and activities," including:

  • The PaintCare program, which has been approved in four states and is headed for approval in Washington State;
  • Its Green Building Workgroup;
  • Sending a delegate to the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in June 2012; and
  • A new Sustainability Policy Statement, adopted by the ACA Board of Directors in December. The statement expresses support for initiatives that minimize environment impacts, benefit local communities. and "constructively engage policymakers and other public stakeholders to advance sustainability practices."

The new Sustainability Workgroup will bring these issues "under a single umbrella" and coordinate activities with other ACA committees and workgroups, the association said.

Priority Issues

The Sustainability Workgroup will focus "on a set of concrete issues to support the paint and coatings industry and encourage sustainability," ACA said.

Product ingredient disclosure requirements, such as those proposed in LEED v4, will be a priority issue for ACA's new Sustainability Workgroup.

The group's goal is to focus "on those issues that deliver the most value to the industry." The panel has identified these priority issues:

  • Environmental marketing and ecolabels;
  • Environmental product declarations;
  • Development of international product category rules for the coatings industry;
  • Life cycle analysis for the coatings industry;
  • Sustainable manufacturing;
  • How the coatings industry aligns with global sustainability initiatives;
  • Corporate sustainability reporting; and
  • Sustainable design/green building.
