With brushes and rollers in tow, a team of skilled painting contractors met up with celebrities and other volunteers to paint one of the latest homes rebuilt in the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans.

The 1,400 square-foot-home is the 91st home built by Make It Right, a non-profit organization established by actor Brad Pitt to provide new, affordable and environmentally sustainable housing for flood victims of Hurricane Katrina.

A team of skilled painters volunteered to paint this newly constructed home in the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Lower Ninth Ward.

Benjamin Moore & Company teamed up with Make It Right for the day of painting service held Saturday, Feb. 2. Many of the painting contractors traveled from the Baltimore, MD, area for the effort, which coincided with the 2013 Super Bowl, according to Benjamin Moore.

Designed by BNIM Architects of Kansas City, MO, the home will be ready for occupancy this spring, the Montvale, NJ-based paint company said.

All of Make It Right’s homes and buildings are designed to meet the highest standards in green building, according to its website. The organization has three additional residences under construction in the area.

“Benjamin Moore has been a valued partner over the past five years, generously supporting our funding, supplying to date more than 10,000 gallons of paint products and even curating recommended color palettes that complement our architecture and community,” according to Tom Darden, executive director of Make It Right.

The volunteers applied Benjamin Moore's Aura paint, a 100% acrylic coating, to the exterior of the new home.

The painter volunteers from Baltimore were Joseph Van Meter, of Exquisite Painting & Wallcovering; Russell Henry, Masterpiece Painting; Michael McGurk, Bay Country Painters; Carl Dakes, The Dakes Co.; Salvatore DiFrancesca, Prime Painting; and Matthew Chaney, Capital Coatings. Local volunteers were from Helm Paint & Decorating.

Benjamin Moore’s 100% Acrylic Aura Exterior Paint was used on the project. Paint colors included Brookside Moss, Lodge, Rancho Clay and Bachelor Blue.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the strongest storms to hit the coast of the United States during the last 100 years. The Aug. 29, 2005, storm wiped out homes and businesses in the New Orleans area, caused millions in damage and killed thousands. The Ninth Ward was one of the hardest hit areas.
