LAS VEGAS—Roofing and waterproofing maker Hyload has announced that its white-roof membranes can withstand a pounding from four-inch diameter hail.

The company reports that independent testing results concluded that its Alproof and Alpsam roofing systems withstood the impact of a four-inch diameter ice ball, fired from a pneumatic launcher at an impact speed of 150 feet per second.

Hyload's Energy Star-certified white-roof membranes, Alproof and Alpsam, are recommended for commercial, industrial and institutional applications.

Wadsworth, OH-based Hyload delivered the test results during 2013 World of Concrete Feb. 4-8 in Las Vegas.

Some of the roofing materials tested were also sprayed with water to simulate more severe hailstorm conditions; testing also included a sampling of a 22-year-old roof that is still in place and performing, the company noted.

The testing was performed by New Mexico-based Jim D. Koontz & Associates Inc., according to the company.

Hyload Systems’ Technology

Alproof is an uncoated membrane that can be laid in cold-applied adhesives or hot asphalt. Alpsam is a self-adhered membrane in a “peel and stick” configuration.

Both systems feature DuPont Elvaloy plasticizing resins, considered among the most durable and easiest to maintain in the industry, the company says.

The white-roof membranes are recommended for commercial, industrial and institutional applications.

Alproof and Alpsam are Energy Star certified and contribute to LEED credits for projects, the company adds.

The company manufactures a variety of roofing, waterproofing, flashing and green-roof systems. Hyload is owned by IKO, a 60-year-old global manufacturer and supplier of roofing products.

Hail-resistant roofing is growing in popularity. Boral Roofing of Roswell, GA, recently introduced its own Class 4 Hail Resistant Roof Tile.
