Graeme Armstrong, who oversees research, development, and innovation for AkzoNobel, has been appointed to lead the company's North American operations.

Armstrong will become Managing Director of Surface Chemistry and Country Director for North America, succeeding Bob Margevich, who is retiring, the company announced Jan. 23.

Armstrong is currently the Executive Committee member responsible for Research, Development, and Innovation (RD&I) at Netherlands-based AkzoNobel. The company is the world's largest paint and coatings maker and a major producer of specialty chemicals.

AkzoNobel's Graeme Armstrong (left) will replace Bob Margevich as Managing Director of Surface Chemistry and Country Director for North America.

Armstrong will assume his new responsibilities April 1 and will work alongside Margevich for two months to ensure a smooth transition, AkzoNobel said. Armstrong will continue his RD&I responsibilities until a successor is announced.

Experience, Education

Armstrong, 50, joined AkzoNobel in 2008 after the acquisition of ICI, where he had led the company's RD&I function. Before joining ICI, Armstrong spent 19 years in the detergents industry for Unilever and JohnsonDiversey.

He graduated from the University of Newcastle in the UK, where he obtained a BSc in chemistry and a PhD in inorganic chemistry.

He is a Chartered Chemist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a member of its Science Policy Board. He is also chairman of Chemistry Innovation PLC and a former non-executive director of the UK government Technology Strategy Board.

"I would like to congratulate Graeme with his new role," said Ton Büchner, CEO of AkzoNobel. "It was his clear wish to return to a business role, following a highly successful tenure as head of our RD&I activities.

"On behalf of myself and the Executive Committee, I would like to wish Graeme luck in his new position and thank Bob for his invaluable contributions to the company."
