Barbie Breaks Ground on Building Career

While Barbie has yet to give up her pink heels and silk for work boots and flannel, the blonde bombshell has broken ground in the construction toy arena.

Mattel Inc. and Mega Bloks recently teamed up to launch the Mega Bloks Barbie Build ‘n Style line to inspire the next generation of women construction engineers.

The construction toy line centers on building Barbie's eight-room, 301-piece luxury mansion, one pink block at a time.

Released in big-box stores Dec. 12 just in time for the holiday season, the extension product line features a luxury dream mansion—painted pink—and pastel Mega Bloks construction toy sets.

The Barbie construction toys are intended to help develop math and science skills early on, according to the companies. Research in child development has shown that children significantly benefit from playing with building blocks and toys, delivering longterm benefits beyond the playroom, the manufacturers say.

Building the Dream Mansion

The line is centered on building the ever-coveted dream home, one pink block at a time. The 301-piece luxury mansion features eight interchangeable rooms to build, design and decorate.

It is unclear whether Architect Barbie, who made her debut in 2011, helped to design the digs.

Architect Barbie could not be reached for comment on the new dream home.

Technology also plays a role in the bubblegum-pink home: Barbie can build her own working elevator for the space.

The line also features other building projects, including a pet shop, fashion boutique, fashion stand, ice cream cart, beach house, and pool (party).

Mattel's foray into the construction toy category is the toy titan's latest attempt to bridge the gender gap and inspire little girls to go into typically male-dominated careers.

Well, now that the diva can design and build her own dream house, can Painting Contractor Barbie be far behind? Perhaps she’ll do away with all that pink.

My only question: What took them so long? I remember being torn between Barbie and Lego as a child and eventually abandoning Barbie for the option with a more tangible creativity.

But why do they have to be pink? It's not a color most houses IRL would be...

Pink is Barbie's favorite color, Lynn!! She's got a pink corvette, a pink plan tube, even a pink motor home! What else would her house be BUT pink!?!

Sigh. I know pink is her favorite color, and I guess I'll have to grant her the right to choose to have everything pink in her life. (Though I do have a very old Barbie corvette and it's red).
