Pavement coatings maker Bonsal American Inc. has acquired Surface Coatings Company Inc., a manufacturer of asphalt pavement maintenance coatings and products.

Surface Coatings Co. will become part of Bonsal American's Pavement Maintenance Division.

Formed in 1975, Surface Coatings (Auburn Hills, MI) manufactures industrial-grade sealer for asphalt pavements (trademarked as Seal-Pave, Seal-Pave AE and Seal-Pave Blend) and distributes a variety of crack fillers and other pavement maintenance items throughout Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Ontario.
Bonsal American (Charlotte, NC), a business unit of Oldcastle, produces paints, sealers, additives and primers for pavement under the GemSeal brand. The company is one of the United States' largest producers of packaged building material products, including cement mixes, concrete repair and restoration products, tile and stone installation products, bulk masonry mixes, and pavement maintenance products.
In addition to GemSeal, Bonsal American sells Sakrete, ProSpec, and Amerimix brands.
The deal will make Surface Coatings a part of Bonsal American's Pavement Maintenance Division, and the Surface Coatings brand will continue in the market, according to Bonsal American.
Transition Details
The acquisition will expand Bonsal American's presence in the Upper Midwest; the company has an existing Michigan location in New Boston.
"The acquisition fits very well with our long-term growth strategy," said Bonsal American president David Maske. "It will provide our existing customers with a greater depth of expertise in sealcoat, crack sealant and other solutions for pavement maintenance."

He added, "Additionally, it provides our new team members from Surface Coatings with access to GemSeal’s network of plants, R&D focus and new customers."
Bonsal American’s Pavement Maintenance Division (PMD) manufactures specialty pavement coatings and other GemSeal-branded products from New Boston and eight other plants that service the 32 easternmost states.
During 2013, PMD will merge its existing Michigan sealer production in New Boston into the Surface Coatings plant, Bonsal American announced. The existing site will remain active as a southern Detroit distribution point.
Key Leadership Changes
The newly combined operation will be headed by Surface Coatings’ Lee Lowis, the new Territory General Manager, Bonsal American said.
John Camburn, the former president of Surface Coatings, has accepted the position of Strategic Advisor reporting to Jeff Lax, the chief operating officer for PMD.
