It opened in 1914 with 78 students and five faculty members. During World War II, the University’s Founder’s Hall had to be camouflaged to keep Japanese submarines from using it as a navigational aid because of its visibility from the Pacific Ocean, according to Wikipedia.
The roof of the campus art shop then became an air observation post, staffed mainly by the wives of university faculty, and remained in place until 1953.
Today, the university has a student population of about 7,500 and boasts the only endowed chair in the world dedicated to a single species of tree: the Kenneth L. Fisher Chair in Redwood Forest Ecology.
The Canyon residence hall complex, located next to the Arcata Community Forest on the campus, is comprised of eight buildings: Alder, Cedar, Chinquapin, Hemlock, Madrone, Maple, Pepperwood, and Tan Oak Halls. Each four-story building houses 50 students on the upper three floors.
