Ho-hum hues are leaving home, clearing the way for a dramatic color comeback in home décor, color experts are forecasting.

Color-shy homeowners have become more comfortable with powerful shades, embracing dramatic teals and sharp fuchsias in their decorating, according to PPG Pittsburgh Paints’ new 2013-14 residential color outlook.

Bright fuchsia and sea foam provide an energetic bolt amid dramatic black, feminine pink, and neutrals in the Elusion palette.

Teal and fuchsia are two of the 25 vibrant colors set out in Color Minded, the company’s Voice of Color trend report for the coming year and beyond.

Driving Color Decisions

“We are living at a time when an unprecedented platform for self-expression exists, due to the constant transformation of technology and ever-growing connectivity and communication,” says Dee Schlotter, color expert and brand manager for PPG Pittsburgh Paints.

Driving the new look: new technologies, new idealism, and faster lifestyles than ever.

“Everything is more sophisticated and multimodal in its design today—from our smartphones, to the cars we drive and the clothes we wear,” Schlotter added. “This sophistication translates to home décor, as we’re now building increasingly complex décor designs with profound depth.”

Trending Palettes

Here is PPG Pittsburgh’s take on the five new color palettes that embody its interior design forecast.

Everyday Hero: This trend beckons the low-key, eco-friendly hipster. A mellow approach to colorization, the palette favors smart, functional basics with designs and products that work well and adapt to lifestyles with no embellishment. The focus is on clean, crisp lines, order and lightness.

Elusion: This palette brings to life a fairy-tale environment for grown-ups. A hint of the 1980s emerges, with sharp fuchsia and magenta playing against teal. Unexpected shaped furniture challenges perceptions. Gold mirrors and transparent items add impact.

Artful Expression: A mix of traditional and contemporary embodies both spirit and deep connections to tradition and multiculturalism. Traditional meets bohemian with crochet, string art, and handmade pottery décor components.

The Artful Expression palette matches vibrant mid-tones and bright colors such as mustard yellow, olive green and salmon.

Discreet Luxury: This palette offers a contemporary take on classic masculine and feminine ideas, blending curvaceous forms with sturdy materials. This theme relies on texture, surface design and material to convey craftsmanship. Mixed metallics, porous woods and textured fabrics offer a rugged, yet refined, timelessness.

Discreet Luxury offsets rich reddish-brown and blue with pale blues and grays.

Modern is Tech: Pared down and fashionable, this trend embraces the modernist spirit with the stark, but friendly, appeal of futuristic technology. This theme seeks a new outlook and vision for living. Strong, mathematical lines with a touch of fluidity meet clean, compact fabrics.

Comment from William Rosbottom, (10/15/2012, 12:58 PM)

As the economy continues to improve, the character of our palettes evolves to express the optimism on the horizon. Props to PPG, Pantone, Benjamin Moore and [the mother of all color marketers:] CMG for drilling down to the common denominators of the evolution, and packaging it in manageable/understandable information. However, the bottom line is that color speaks to each of us individually. It will benefit those who choose to embrace their experience with color [and space] when they recognize their connection with hue, chroma and value rather than to accept color based solely on what 'trend' indicates.
