SSPC is seeking commercial coating projects of outstanding innovation, beauty, complexity and durability for its annual Structure Awards, which honor the achievements of contractors, designers, end users and manufacturers on challenging coatings projects. The Society for Protective Coatings will present the awards Jan. 14 at SSPC 2013, in San Antonio, TX. The winners will also appear later in D+D News and JPCL.

Long known for its protective coatings mission, SSPC launched a commercial coatings panel at SSPC 2012.
Under the leadership of KTA-Tator president Kenneth Trimber, that group is working to develop independent, consensus-based standards for coatings and related materials used in commercial and institutional applications. The work also includes developing guides related to surface preparation, coatings selection and coatings application for the commercial, architectural and institutional sectors.
Project Eligibility
Coatings projects on all types of structures are eligible, including work on commercial, historical and industrial structures.
Except for the longevity award and the Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence (detailed below), nominated projects must have been completed between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 15.

A representative of the structure owner must attend the awards luncheon to accept the award and grant permission for the information to appear in JPCL. Award Categories
The Structure Awards feature these categories.
Crone Knoy Award: For outstanding industrial or commercial coatings work that demonstrates innovation, durability or utility.
Charles G. Munger (Longevity) Award: For an outstanding industrial or commercial project that demonstrates longevity of the original coating.
William Johnson Award: For industrial or commercial coatings projects that demonstrate exceptional aesthetic merit. George Campbell Award: For outstanding completion of a difficult or complex industrial or commercial coatings project. Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence: For exceptional coatings work on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities.
