Just as an eclectic array of entrée items rounds out menus in Los Angeles’ cafés, bars and restaurants, the eateries’ contemporary designs add flavor to the area’s vibrant design offerings.
The American Institute of Architects’ Los Angeles chapter has picked the top designs in its annual Restaurant Design Awards program, part of the Dwell on Design expo. The award program honors “excellence in restaurant design” and is open to any project designed by a U.S. based firm.
Awards were announced in the People’s Choice and Jury categories. Submissions were not restricted to Los Angeles-area designs, and the winners included designs in New York and Park City, Utah.
AIA/Los Angeles selected winners in three main categories, Lounge/Nightclub, Café/Bar, and Restaurant. The organization said, “The applicant pool was amazing this year.”
The award jury was comprised of KCRW’s Good Food host Evan Kleiman; architect and principal at Rios Clemente Hale Studios, Mark Rios, FAIA and chef and winner of Bravo TV’s Tops Chef Season 6, Michael Voltaggio. The three came to the AIA/LA offices in May to decide the Jury winners and selected finalists for the People’s Choice Awards voting.
The chapter said the projects received more than 1,500 votes from across the country.
The awards are detailed below.
