The National Park Service, Northeast Region, has invited bids for a project involving abrasive blast cleaning and lead abatement of three historic railroad coaches located at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pa.
Bids are due June 1. A site visit is scheduled for May 17.
According to the park’s website, the Steamtown Historic Site was created nearly 25 years ago to preserve the history of steam railroading throughout the U.S. The park provides visitors with the opportunity to fully experience what it was like to ride these steam engines long ago.

In addition, the park features a Technology Museum and a History Museum, where visitors can explore the history, people, technology and tradition of steam railroading.
The Project
The project involves abrasive blast-cleaning 1,714 square feet of exterior surfaces on each of three historic passenger coaches—the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western (550, 580, and 589).
The coaches are on the National Register of Historic Structures and the collection explains the history and how the equipment was used on the nine anthracite-carrying lines in the Northeast, according to the project documents.
Lead paint on the exterior body, roof and vestibules of the coaches has fallen into a state of deterioration and blasting of the coaches will allow for repair and painting to be performed by the owner.
Built by Pullman in 1914 (550) and 1915 (580 and 589), the coaches are open vestibule and all riveted steel.

Per the project specifications, the cars are not to be sandblasted at the same time and it is a possibility that the delay between blasting of each car may be several months. In addition, the containment area will be allowed to remain between blasting each car.
The Steamtown Historic Site will also obtain a third-party testing firm to perform lead in air and/or bulk sampling before, during and after the work has been completed.
The project is set-aside for Small Business sources and has an estimated cost of between $25,000 and $100,000.
