Sto Corp. says its air-barrier system with StoGuard™ spray-applied building wrap and air barrier met leakproof testing for air and water in a recent “Air Barrier Design Challenge” hosted by Architectural Testing Inc. in Chelmsford, Mass.
The event was sponsored by the Boston Building Enclosure Council (BEC).
Sto said 10 teams of practicing design and construction professionals assembled 4-by-8-foot building-envelope mock-up panels with a variety of membrane and fluid-applied air- and moisture-barrier systems. The Sto Team’s StoGuard air-barrier system did not leak in the air and water tests, even at the sensitive material joints or at screw holes.

The two methods used in the testing were ASTM E 783 (field test for air leakage) and ASTM E 1105 (field test for moisture leakage), Sto said.
The company says StoGuard is a spray-on building wrap that is waterproof and functions as an air barrier, offering protection against air leakage and moisture intrusion in a variety of applications. The product can be used underneath wood, vinyl, cement siding, cement stucco, and other exterior insulation and finish systems.
The StoGuard assembly consists of joint treatment, and Sto Gold Coat® or Sto EmeraldCoat® waterproof coatings, applied to wall sheathing, prepared concrete, or concrete masonry wall construction. Sto Gold Coat is formulated for use under EIFS and other claddings, while Sto EmeraldCoat is formulated for use under stucco, with applications also possible under other claddings. Combined, the components create a seamless, structural air and waterproof barrier, the company says.
