The 45th annual International Waterborne, High-Solids and Powder Coatings Symposium, is taking place all this week (Feb. 4-9) at the Astor Crowne Plaza in New Orleans.

Set to bring educational courses, panel discussion, a technology showcase and several speakers, the event will also host several networking events and a student poster session.

Education

The event will hold three short course options (with add-on classes also available) that will take place on Monday and Tuesday.

  • Statistical Design of Experiments, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Feb. 5-6, will provide an introduction to the theory and practice of the statistical design of experiments. This is aimed toward coatings chemists, formulators and product developers. This course will be presented by Sarah E. Morgan, professor of polymer science; and Les Goff, founder and president of Goff Consulting LLC.
  • The Science of Formulation, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Feb. 5-6, will cover major coating types that are presented at a fundamental technical level and designed for entry-level chemists in the coatings industry or as a refresher course. This course will be presented by James W. Rawlins, associate professor of polymer science and engineering.
  • Reformulating to Waterborne Coatings, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Feb. 5-6, will provide an introduction to the technology of waterborne coatings with an emphasis on the challenge of converting solvent-borne coating systems. The course will be presented by Robson F. Storey, professor of polymer science.

The rest of the week opens up with different educational tracks (including general, waterborne and additives) with two offered on Wednesday and Thursday and one track on Friday. The exhibition hall also opens on Tuesday.

Other Events

Multiple speakers, an expert panel and networking events will round out the program.

Speakers include:

  • 2018 Plenary Speaker Philip Costanzo, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at California Polytechnic State University;
  • 2018 Sidney Lauren Memorial Lecturer Donald Campbell, BASF Corporation, Coatings Division; and
  • 2018 Keynote Speaker Dean Webster, professor coatings and polymeric materials at North Dakota State University.
