The Harvard Graduate School of Design recently announced that it will again be providing a free online course on the fundamentals of architecture in 2018. The start date, however, has yet to be determined, despite recent news reports announcing the class.

University publication The Harvard Crimson released the news of the 2018 program last week, however, it reported that the 10-week course entitled “The Architectural Imagination” is set to launch Feb. 28.

Feb. 28, though, is actually the end date to the program’s most recent run. A memo on the course website notes: “Recently, a few websites have incorrectly listed the start date of this course. A re-run date for 2018 is planned, but no specific date has been announced. Please keep this in mind before starting the course, especially if you plan to earn a certificate. Certificates must be earned before the close date of Feb. 28, 2018.”

About the Course

The class aims to teach students how to “read architecture as a cultural expression as well as a technical achievement.”

Objectives include learning:

  • How to read, analyze and understand different forms of architectural representation;
  • Social and historical contexts behind major works of architecture;
  • Basic principles to produce your own architectural drawings and models; and
  • Pertinent content for academic study or a professional career as an architect.

The course materials were produced by K. Michael Hays, the Eliot Noyes professor of architectural theory and associate dean for academic affairs; Erika Naginski, professor of architectural history and director of graduate studies; Antoine Picon, G. Ware Travelstead professor of the history of architecture and technology and technology director of research; and Ph.D. student Lisa Haber-Thomson.

The current course is still open for registration and pupils can purchase a certificate of completion as well. For more information, click here.
