Italian architecture firm Carlo Ratti Associati has taken a cue from Willy Wonka—by building a pavilion composed entirely of chocolate.

The structure, which is made up of 30,000 chocolate pralines, was commissioned by Italian chocolate manufacturer Venchi and debuted at FICO Eataly World, where attendees can both eat the chocolate and see how Italian dishes are made.

Chocolate Pavilion

Visitors are welcome to pick the chocolate off the walls of the pavilion, and the candies themselves were arranged to represent a chocolate bar, noted Attractions Magazine.

Once visitors enter the pavilion, facial recognition software measures and analyzes the movement of eyebrows, lips and other facial components, to determine what the visitor is feeling. Visitors’ faces are then projected onto the interior walls, which measure 26 feet wide, and 11.5 feet tall.

Visitors can then go to the Chocolate Portraits room, where prior recordings are displayed. The final step of the pavilion features a display of how Venchi makes its chocolate. Here, visitors can get a hands-on experience with their own customized chocolate bar.

Pavilion Design

CRA founding partner Carlo Ratti led the design of the pavilion, and for this project, he told Business Insider, he “never liked the fact that exhibitions require the use of large amounts of construction materials that then end up in landfills after just a few months.” For the chocolate pavilion, Ratti and associates asked the question, “What if the pavilion could be dismantled by simply eating it?”

But, according to Ratti, the construction process was difficult, as "some building parts were eaten up on site during the installation.”

Eataly World

FICO Eataly World, located in Bologna, Italy, focuses on Italian restaurants and food making, featuring 25 acres of farmland that educate visitors on how farmers process meats, cheeses and other products.

The development was established in 2014, costing $160 million, and finally opened on Nov. 15 of this year.

For those interested in visiting, admission is free.
