In a province in eastern China, a three-story structure in the shape of a crab acts as an homage to local industry, while also providing a space for ecological studies.

The stainless-steel-shelled structure stands over 240 feet long and just over 50 feet high, which makes it around 1,000 times larger than the mitten crab its modeled after.

Crab Commerce

Zhao Jianlin, general manager with Baxieyuan Management Company, the company responsible for building the giant crab, told Xinhua that the structure will be used as a commercial complex, with facilities for entertainment and leisure.

"This building can help demonstrate the crab culture and history of Bacheng township," he said.

Yangcheng Lake, in the Jiangsu Province, where the structure is situated, sees a total of more than 2,000 tons of Chinese mitten crabs caught annually. The crabs are named after their furry claws, and are found to reside in the fresh waters of China’s eastern provinces. According to Xinhua, the creatures are an autumn delicacy.

The interior of the building is still under construction, but the exterior is complete and able to withstand typhoons and strong shore winds.

Jianlin went on to add that construction had begun on the crab-tivating structure in March of this year, with a slated completion date set for the latter part of 2018. The space will also function as an ecology center, according to reports.
