Benjamin Moore Releases 2018 Color of the Year Pick

Paint company Benjamin Moore (Montvale, New Jersey) released its pick for its Color of the Year 2018 on Wednesday (Oct. 11), becoming only the second company so far to choose a warm color for its annual prediction.

Caliente AF-290—a rich, bold, vibrant red—is the 2018 pick, and was released along with a palette of a few dozen colors as accents.

“Strong, radiant and full of energy, Caliente AF-290 is total confidence. It is pleasing, passionate and makes people feel special, like ‘red carpet treatment,’” said Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore Director of Strategic Design Intelligence.

“Whether used as one note or on four walls, the spirited personality of red turns heads signaling surprise and adventure. The eye can’t help but follow its bold strokes.”

While the palette incorporates the full red spectrum (from Deep Poinsettia to Pleasant Pink), it also features a wide range of whites, neutrals and complementary bold yet cool tones, such as Stone, Wolf Gray and Black Beauty.

The company said that its team drew inspiration from arts, design, architecture, pop culture, fashion and home furnishings.

“Their collective findings demonstrated an emergence of red hues, embodying the change, strength, confidence and vitality that permeates cultural movements around the world,” the company said.

The company also notes that the bold, warm hue can make add personality to a variety of spaces, whether it be a mid-century modern home, a farm house or a beach bungalow.
