Coatings and sealants manufacturer Karnak (Clark, New Jersey) recently launched its new high-performance vapor-permeable air barrier for above-grade application.

The K-NRG Seal VP is a seamless elastomeric membrane that works to seal the building envelope, preventing air passage while allowing vapor permeability, the company says, adding that it’s designed to aid in energy efficiency and mold resistance.

The K-NRG Seal VP is a seamless elastomeric membrane that works to seal the building envelope, preventing air passage while allowing vapor permeability, the company says, adding that it’s designed to aid in energy efficiency and mold resistance.

“We are proud to launch an air barrier product that offers long-term sustainability and durability in building envelope protection,” said Chris Salazar, Chief Operating Officer of KARNAK.

“From architect or specifier, to installer, to building owner and building occupant, K-NRG Seal VP is a product that will benefit everyone.”

The company notes that the liquid-applied, fire-rated barrier has been evaluated by the Air Barrier Association of America, meeting the highest industry standards. The product also passes the NFPA 285 Fire Test, which makes it compliant with IBC 2012. It also exceeds ASTM E2357 and ASTM E2178.

The spray-applied K-NRG Seal VP adheres to most wall construction materials, the company said, including exterior gypsum boards, CMU, stone, wood, metal, and damp or dry concrete.

Karnak has now entered into the Air Barrier Market that is already saturated with products. A vapor permeable product works sufficiently in only certain parts of the country. Here in the North East we need both types depending on the Building - preferably a non vapor permeable. What can the K-NRG do that makes it any better or different than all the other competitors?

Hi David: Thanks for your comments. K-NRG Seal VP has several factors, it achieves the NFPA 285 rating performance at a lower cured film thickness saving owners money. Also, because it is NFPA 285 rated,it complies with new construction code requirements. K-NRG is also designed and tested to remain exposed to UV and the elements for a longer period of time than most products on the market today. You are absolutely correct in stating that a Vapor Permeable Air Barrier is not always the right solution. Stay tuned for an upcoming announcement on K-NRG Seal VI (Vapor Impermeable) pending test completion.
