Firms Picked to Lead $10B JFK Project

A team has been tapped by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to lead the extension of the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

The $10 billion project will be led by United Kingdom-based firm duo Mott MacDonald and Grimshaw Architects, which is responsible for spearheading airport redesigns in London, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Zurich, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia and South Africa.

The team also includes TranSolutions, Harris Miller Miller & Hanson, VJ Associates, ACB Architects, EnTech Engineering, Naik Consulting, Reichman Frankle and Holmes Keogh.

A team has been tapped by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to lead the extension of the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

"Our plan for a transformed JFK envisions a unified, state-of-the-art airport to meet the demands of current and future passengers, and with this action, we're making these plans a reality," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

"The new JFK will be a crown jewel of the New York City transportation network, an airport of the caliber that New Yorkers deserve, and a center of economic vitality and activity."

Cuomo and his Airport Advisory Panel came up with a series of goals for the project, which include: an interconnected terminal system, overhauled roadway access, enhancements to the AirTrain, expansion of rail mass transit, modern cargo facilities and improvements to the infrastructure.

"Since the dawn of the jet age, John F. Kennedy International Airport has been a global leader in aviation,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton.

“The planned redevelopment of this important worldwide gateway to New York is vital to transforming JFK into the top rank of airports globally. Customers are accustomed to traveling through state-of-the art airport facilities the world over, and deserve no less from this nation's leading international airport."

The MacDonald/Grimshaw team is tasked with designing a plan to meet these goals, as well as a plan for integrating the terminals, redesigning the on-airport traffic pattern and parking lots, adding amenities such as retail and dining, and expanding taxiways and security technology.

The JFK airport saw 58.8 million passengers last year, ranking it No. 5 nationally and No. 16 worldwide. It’s expected to see 60 million this year.
