Buildings Across TX Coast Damaged by Harvey

Hurricane Harvey has done untold damage on the Gulf Coast of Texas, and with meteorologists forecasting a total of 50 inches of rain by Wednesday in some locales, it is not surprising that many areas, such as a tornado-stricken development and a flooded apartment complex, are struggling to recover.

While the hurricane has de-escalated into a tropical storm, heavy rains are expected to persist, according to ABC News. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott urged people to stay off the roads in light of the continued flooding that is expected to happen. Residents were also notified to keep an eye out for tornados, one of which hit Sienna Plantation, a suburb of Houston. Other areas were also greatly impacted by flooding, like downtown Houston, where an apartment complex found itself under alarming levels of water.

Apartment Complex Flooding

Northeast Convention Apartments, located southeast of downtown Houston, was partially submerged beginning 2 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 27) morning, according to NBC 5. Water from the Brays Bayou, right next door, found its way into apartments in the complex during flooding.

"All the water was coming up. We didn't know what to do," Louis Llanas, a resident of Northeast Convention Apartments, told NBC 5. "We were knocking on people's doors waking everybody up."

Darryl Smalls, a resident living in a downstairs apartment, told the news station that the bayou had never done something like this before. Smalls had to flee his apartment with his son, and said that he had lost everything.

But for another resident, Mark Artisan, found something unexpected in his own unit—a fish.

"He jumped out of the water while I was getting food out of the refrigerator,” Artisan told NBC 5.

Tornado Hits Homes

While many in the Houston area were preparing for rain and flooding, Sienna Plantation, a development southwest of Houston, got hit with a tornado around 1 a.m. on Saturday (Aug. 26).

"It sounded like a freight train," resident Jim Rose told NBC 5. "It's just gonna be hard to rebuild."

Rose’s home did not sustain heavy damage, according to NBC, but his formerly tidy lawn was a mess after the tornado.

Neighbor’s homes had windows blown out, trees knocked over and roofs torn off by the force of the storm.

"So you gotta be real happy when all you got is a roof leak and trees down," Rose added.

Collapsed Retirement Home

In Rockport, where the hurricane made landfall on Friday, first responders rescued those trapped in a collapsed senior center. With the roof collapsed, rescue attempts were difficult.

From those rescued, whether they were senior center residents or people who had taken shelter there during the storm remains unclear. Those injured were taken to a local makeshift hospital.

As it stands, the damage is widespread and won't be understood in totality for days.
