Programming for the second Chicago Architecture Biennial was announced this week, focusing on making new history and exploring issues associated with the urban experience.

Seeking to bring together the past and the future, 2017’s Biennial will feature a number of lectures by current established architects, along with examinations of historic designs and buildings. The event, which runs this fall and winter, is to be curated by Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, the artistic directors behind the architecture firm Johnston Marklee, which is based in Los Angeles.

Biennial Programming

Programming for the Biennial highlights a wide variety of offerings for the public, ranging from talks with architects to examining historic designs.

CAB Pillars, the predominant lecture series at the event, includes an examination of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright in a 21st century context, and a talk by Johnston and Lee that shares its name with the theme of the Biennial—“Make New History.”

Throughout the course of the season, according to Curbed Chicago, there will be weekly offerings on Tuesday nights covering topics such as the climate change art installation known as White Wanderer, designed by Chicago-based architects Luftwerk. Film screenings will be held on Wednesday nights in collaboration with the Chicago International Film Festival.

For those attendees more interested in long-form discussions, the Biennial is offering CAB Sessions, the offerings of which include the role of organic architecture, human perception and built environments and a talk on how to design with light.

The city of Chicago will also be transformed to a degree, with the Cultural Center’s Randolph Square being made into an indoor amphitheater, designed by Frida Escobedo, in order for the architect to engage with visitors.

“The programs offered by the 2017 Biennial are designed to appeal to many audiences,” Chicago Architecture Biennial Chair Jack Guthman said in a recent statement. “They also serve to showcase the quality and diversity of the city's cultural institutions.”

The Biennial is slated to take place from Sept. 16 to Jan. 7.
