Desjarlais will describe and explain the use of an online energy calculator developed by ORNL to allow designers and contractors to better estimate the energy and financial savings that can be achieved by reducing air leakage through building assemblies.

The conference program will be divided into two sessions, featuring panel discussions and presentations. The first class of the afternoon session, “Modeling Building Envelope Energy Efficiency and Developing a Web-Based Energy Savings Calculator for Building Envelope Air Tightness,” will be conducted by Andre O. Desjarlais, program manager for the Building Envelope Systems Research Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

About the Class

Desjarlais will describe and explain the use of an online energy calculator developed by ORNL to allow designers and contractors to better estimate the energy and financial savings that can be achieved by reducing air leakage through building assemblies. 

Uncontrolled heat, air and moisture transfer through the building envelope has a significant impact on energy usage. A comprehensive strategy for concurrently regulating these factors will have a major impact on reducing energy consumption. Specifically, the energy implications of building envelope air tightness are poorly understood.

A simple-to-use calculator tool is now available online that allows building professionals to estimate the energy and monetary savings associated with the deployment of an air barrier system.

After completing this session, attendees will better understand:

  • How whole building computer simulation tools handle conduction and air tightness of buildings;
  • The significance air tightness plays in the overall energy efficiency of buildings;
  • A methodology for developing a database of simulation runs to extract air tightness benefits; and
  • How much money a building owner can save by requiring improved levels of air tightness for their buildings.

This session will also include a presentation on quality assurance and installation requirements for liquid-applied air barriers.
