Those who love the Guggenheim Museum can build their own replica of the iconic building at home, thanks to Lego.

Fully assembled, the set is 4 inches high, 7 inches wide and 5 inches deep.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, which has 744 bricks, is a new update to Lego's 2009 building block set. The updates include more true-to-life color in the sand-green details of the rotunda, and other details, such as air conditioning units being on top of the office building addition, making the Lego set all the more authentic for museum aficionados.

The release of the latest themed Lego set is part of an ongoing commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The Guggenheim Museum, designed by Wright, was commissioned in 1943, but not completed until 1959. The adjoining office tower was part of Wright’s original design for the museum, but was not actually built until 1992. The tower provides a point of contrast to the main museum building.

The kit’s details extend out to Fifth Avenue in the model, which features two crosswalks and two yellow taxis. Fully assembled, the set is 4 inches high, 7 inches wide and 5 inches deep. The instructional booklet also provides details on the building’s history and design.

Some other set details are:

  • The name of the museum—The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum—is printed on a 1-by-8 tile, and a 2-by-2 rounded slope. There are no stickers in the set.
  • The rotunda is built from bow and outward-facing arch bricks. Each level is larger than what is below, which “necessitates unique Lego geometries for each floor."

The set uses Studs Not On Top (SNOT) geometry to implement complex building techniques, including half-stud-offset connections. The end result is realistic exterior facing and banks of windows.

"This accurately detailed Lego model faithfully recreates the curves and distinctive lines that have made this building an architectural icon for the last half-century," a Lego spokesperson said in an interview.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum set costs $79.99. The model is available for purchase directly from Lego or Target. Wright's Fallingwater and Robie House have also been released by Lego.

Very nice. LEGO has been continued to put out very nice specialty sets. I particularly like the new Saturn V as well. One editorial item for the title: The term is LEGO or LEGO bricks, not "Legos"

The completed size seems small (4 x 7 x 5 inches) using 744 bricks.

The kit is one of their architecture line....most are small versions and looking at the bricks used (the office addition looks like it has lots of 1x1 flat plates for the façade, taxi's are 1x1 plate on 1x2 single post plates) I can see the number of bricks being higher for the overall size. It would be interesting to see what they could do with it if they ever did a "big brick" version like they have with the Sydney Opera House.
