Valdez Painting Inc. and R&B Protective Coatings partnered up with Tnemec Company Inc. to coat the greenest arena in the country—the Golden 1 Center, home of the National Basketball Association Sacramento Kings.

The $556 million structure is the first indoor sports arena to achieve LEED Platinum status. It is 100 percent solar powered and uses 45 percent less water and 30 percent less energy than required by California regulations. It features two open concourses and five six-story aircraft hangar doors that open for natural cooling during entertainment events.

Those doors, manufactured in Minnesota, were shop-primed with Series 27WB Typoxy, a low-odor, low-VOC water-based epoxy coating. A finish coat was also applied—Series 1095 Endura-Shield, a low-VOC aliphatic acrylic polyurethane coating, which was also applied to the building’s structural steel.

Most of the primer and finish coatings specified for the project contained less than 100 grams per liter of VOCs.

The arena’s ceiling and decking required more than 3,600 gallons of Series 115 Uni-Bond DF, a high-performance waterborne acrylic primer and finish. Those surfaces including galvanized sheet metal, structural steel and cementitious fireproofing. It was spray-applied, with crews working from swing stages and 185-foot tall cherry-pickers.

The arena’s ceiling and decking required more than 3,600 gallons of Series 115 Uni-Bond DF, a high-performance waterborne acrylic primer and finish.

Most of the colors used were gray, white and arena silver; however, Pantone PMS 123 athletic gold was used for the lettering on the structure’s roof, which also used the Series 1095 finish for UV resistance.
