With only weeks left to submit an entry for Durability + Design’s inaugural Elevation Awards, we will be counting down to the deadline (May 26) by featuring a select nomination each day, giving you a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Commercial Exteriors” category.

Southwest Progressive Enterprises Inc. jumped in for the home stretch of construction on the Orlando City Soccer Club Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

Thermocromex was chosen as the exterior cladding, as the limestone product provided a way of weatherproofing the structure without the need to be recolored in a humid, salt-air environment.

The workers’ main task was to make the exterior of the building look like natural limestone block work in varying sizes without using typical metal or vinyl trim and to duplicate the look on large walls without the use of control joints.

Because the product is lime-based and not cement, the slower cure time allowed workers to score the joints (the material allowed for scored joints up to a depth of 1½ inches) up to three days after the initial application, allowing them to work on whatever area was most accessible on the day-to-day as they raced the clock with other teams. (The main contractor on the project was LP Construction.)

Thermocromex was chosen as the exterior cladding, as the limestone product provided a way of weatherproofing the structure without the need to be recolored in a humid, salt-air environment.

The work, which started in November 2016, was finished on March 3, just two days before the Orlando Lions were set to take the field for the home opener. (The date had been pushed up by three weeks by Major League Soccer.) The last half of the 100,000 square feet was completed in a three-week time frame by a 20-man crew, using three separate pumps for application.
