Beijing Civic Center Will Have Ski Slope Roof

By 2020 Beijing will have a new ski slope. On the roof of its civic center, that is.

Designed by American architect Andrew Bromberg, of Aedas, the China World Trade Center Phase 3C will be complete with a sloping hill that starts at the crest of the building and slides down the spiraled structure.

The Project

The China World Trade Center Development has been ongoing “organically” for the past 30 years, according to the Aedas website. Phase 3C is the fifth and final phase of the development, aimed at bringing the people of China together, and is designed as a continued loop to complement the multiple subway lines it ties together as well as the connections to major roadways.

The community- and green-oriented plan calls for a looped structure with elevated green space the whole way around in a series of terraces. The slope around the terraces will get a coat of fake snow in the winter months for skiing and sledding.

In addition to the green roofing aspects of the building, materials used will also include low-emissivity and low-iron glass. An irrigation system will reduce the landscape requirements by 30 percent.

The building will also include an amphitheater, art studios, exhibition spaces, an organic farm, cultural and educational facilities, a rock-climbing wall and a water play area (which will be an ice-skating rink in the winter).

Construction is slated to start this August.
