Former First Lady Michelle Obama will speak to thousands of architects and building professionals in attendance at the American Institute of Architects’ upcoming annual conference in Orlando.

A’17, the AIA Conference on Architecture, which will begin April 27, is billed as a three-day event full of “fast-paced, hard-hitting ideas, inspiration, education, networking and innovation from some of the industry-leading architects, firms and building product manufacturers.”

Michelle Obama will speak April 27, the first day of A'17.

The bombshell announcement comes less than two months after the organization faced criticism about the lack of diversity in its then announced speaker lineup.

Obama will kick off the conference with a conversation regarding the initiatives and programs she championed over the eight years she served in the White House alongside her husband, former President Barack Obama. The writer and lawyer will address programs such as “Let’s Move!” and “Let Girls Learn,” which are credited with shifting national conversations and public perceptions to make a difference in communities.

Keynote Lineup

AIA’s keynote roster also features a number of leading lights of architecture—including 2016 Pritzker Prize Laureate Alejandro Aravena and MASS Design Group co-founder Michael Murphy. Harvard professor Amy Cuddy will also address the attendees.

The conference features a robust lineup of trainings, seminars and presentations, including some on coatings and related building materials. Several coatings suppliers will be showcasing their products and technologies in the expo as well.

AIA, the national professional association of architects, was founded in 1857. Today, the organization boasts more than 90,000 members and 260 chapters around the world.

More proof of the irrelevance of the AIA by selecting a headline speaker with NO business experience, no relationship to Architecture and nothing beyond partisan politics to harangue the attendees. What a joke! One more reason to avoid membership in a professional organization that does almost nothing to help the real issues in the Architecture world.
