Luxury car company Rolls-Royce Motor Cars brought the world's first diamond paint finish into the light at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show earlier this month with the unveiling of the Ghost Elegance.

Made from 1,000 crushed, ethically sourced diamonds, Rolls-Royce described the car in a press release as “inspired by something that cannot be bought, but is innate … style.”

Made from 1,000 crushed, ethically sourced, diamonds, Rolls-Royce described the car in a press release as “inspired by something that cannot be bought, but is innate … style.”

This style, however, did take a three-person team of scientists two months to develop. Goodwood’s technical laboratory leader, Paolo Travaglia, along with Rawdon Evernden and Joseph Piotrowski, spent the time analyzing the diamonds’ transmission and reflection of light.

The notorious strength of diamonds resulted in a fine powder that was then mixed into the paint. This led to a new painting process that added an extra application of lacquer as the final step during the hand-polishing phase. This process added two days of paint application by hand and another day for the finishing.

Because of this extra process, the Ghost Elegance does not need any special upkeep to retain its glisten over the two-tone gray color.

Commissioned for a private collector, there’s no price tag attached to this particular model. However, Car Magazine reported that a source suggested the paint job alone "set back its owner a cool £250,000” (about $304,000), on top of the cost of the standard car itself. Business Insider noted that a typical Ghost starts at around $300,000.
