Sundeck of San Antonio received top honors for its Mission Concepcion Park project in San Antonio.

The Decorative Concrete Council, a specialty council of the American Society of Concrete Contractors, announced the winners of its ninth annual Decorative Concrete Awards competition on Thursday (Jan. 26).

The winners were recognized at a ceremony Jan. 17, held during World of Concrete in Las Vegas.

Top Winner

The "WOW! Award" for best overall project was bestowed upon Sundeck of San Antonio for its Mission Concepcion Park project in San Antonio.

Mission

The project is described as a "wonderful contrast between liquid nature and solid infrastructure."

The team used a combination of sandblasting and stain to create an intricate, 7,000-square-foot swirled design that mimics the eddies and swirls of the San Antonio River, according to a brief description of the project provided by the DCC. The area needed to be durable enough to hold up under significant bike and foot traffic.

The acid stain was applied first, followed by months of using a needle scaler to remove the surface of the concrete, the description noted. The transformation to stained and exposed concrete pavement reflects a "wonderful contrast between liquid nature and solid infrastructure," according to the council.
