Coatings manufacturer Valspar has announced that it has donated $2.5 million in products and cash to Habitat for Humanity in association with the company’s National Neighborhood Week volunteer program.

During the week of May 9-14, the company reports, volunteers from each Valspar site in the U.S. will work with Habitat on two programs: its home-build projects and its A Brush with Kindness initiative.

Valspar

Volunteers from every Valspar site in the U.S. will work with Habitat for Humanity during the week of May 9-14.

As part of its association with Habitat for Humanity, Valspar has given a total of $600,000 to the nonprofit this year, part of that as an employer match for employee donations.

The company also gave Habitat $1.9 million in paint to Habitat’s ReStores, home-improvement outlets whose proceeds fund the organization’s work with low-income families, seniors and veterans.

Brush with Kindness

Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush with Kindness program provides minor renovations, like painting, for low-income families, who pay for the work using what Habitat calls “affordable loans” that the nonprofit extends.

A Brush with Kindness began as a partnership between Valspar and the Twin Cities Habitat, in Valspar’s headquarter city of Minneapolis, according to Valspar’s vice president of communications, Kim Welch. That program began in 1998, and became a national initiative in 2005.

More than 600 local chapters of Habitat now take part in A Brush with Kindness, according to Welch.

"As a founding partner of the neighborhood revitalization program, A Brush with Kindness, Valspar helps families, seniors and veterans living in homes that are in need of a new coat of paint and minor repairs,” Valspar chairman and CEO Gary E. Hendrickson said.

“Many low-income families live in challenging circumstances and struggle to maintain their homes. The A Brush with Kindness program brightens the lives of families and restores pride throughout neighborhoods."

Valspar’s National Neighborhood Week program will also involve employees taking part in Habitat’s home-build projects. Habitat for Humanity uses volunteer labor to build what the organization calls “simple, decent and affordable” houses for purchase by low-income families.
