For 2016, Pantone has veered from tradition and selected not one, but two colors deemed worthy of its coveted “Color of the Year” title.

They are Serenity (a soft, tranquil blue) and Rose Quartz (a delicate, rose-toned pink), according to a news release. The hues are expected to rise in popularity in the upcoming year’s fashion, home décor and design industries.

It takes two: Pantone suggests the combination of Rose Quartz and Serenity will be go-to hues in 2016.

The selections reveal a stark contrast, or mood swing, from the Color of the Year for 2015, which was Marsala, a deep wine red.

Pantone’s color experts describe Serenity and Rose Quartz as “a harmonious pairing of inviting shades that embody a mindset of tranquility and inner peace.”

‘Gender Blur’

Further, the color authority says the hues reflect a change in how society views color associations.

“In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said in the news release.

“This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumers’ increased comfort with using color as a form of expression which includes a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged, and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”

Interior Usage

When it comes to interiors, the shades will dominate, albeit softly, Pantone says, bringing about a feeling of calm and relaxation.

“Like a serene sunset, Rose Quartz encourages reflection on one’s surroundings while Serenity, a transcendent blue, provides a naturally connected sense of space,” the company says.

The color experts say the colors will work well as paints.

Based in New Jersey, Pantone, an X-Rite company, bills itself as the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries.
