Rome’s nearly 300-year-old Trevi Fountain is flowing once again thanks to a $2.2 million, 17-month-long restoration project, according to reports.

The makeover was funded by Italian luxury fashion giant Fendi.

The Trevi Fountain is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome.

“It’s our duty to pay tribute to the city of Rome, which has given us so much and is part of Fendi’s creative heritage,” Silva Venturini Fendi said in a statement on the designer’s website.

The renewed fountain reopened Tuesday (Nov. 3), according to multiple news reports.

The Restoration

A team of 26 began the restoration effort in June 2014, after pieces of the monument’s cornice reportedly fell off following a particularly harsh winter.

The project included thoroughly cleaning the fountain as well as repairing cracks and steel supports, reports relate.

The monument, designed by Roman architect Nicola Salvi, was completed in 1762.

The sea-god scene also received a lighting upgrade as part of the project.

During the restoration, scaffolding blocked most views of the baroque fountain; however, a special platform was installed to enable tourists to see the fountain.

Tossing Coins

The monument, designed by Roman architect Nicola Salvi, was completed in 1762.

It’s façade and sea reef is made of travertine and the statues are made of carrara marble, according to trevifountain.net.

Millions of tourists visit the fountain each year.

According to tradition, a thrown coin in the Trevi Fountain will ensure another visit to the Eternal City.

The fountain was last restored 23 years ago.

Fashion Funding

Fendi is not the only fashion magnate to fund a major restoration of a Roman icon.

The Italian shoe brand Tod’s is helping to restore The Colosseum.
