WASHINGTON--U.S. paint manufacturers have developed a resource aimed at helping architects and contractors achieve “greener” environmental goals.

The American Coatings Association (ACA) announced July 6 that it has developed a product category rule (PCR) for architectural coatings.

The PCR for Architectural Coatings is available free of charge from NSF International, which is a third-party group that develops public health standards and certification programs.

Defining a PCR

A PCR defines how to conduct a life-cycle assessment for a product group and what to include in that group’s environmental product declaration (EDP) report.

In the case of architectural coatings, the PCR will help architects and contractors identify products that meet certain sustainability needs.

The ACA has developed a product category rule that will help coatings manufacturers do life-cycle assessments and create environmental product declarations for architectural coatings.

ACA said in a statement that the U.S. coatings industry developed the PCR because people who choose and buy paint products are increasingly concerned about their life-cycle impacts.

The PCR for Architectural Coatings will help the manufacturers of those products compete with other building materials that already have their own PCRs.

“This new product category rule for architectural coatings meets the increase in demand for transparency in environmental claims,” Jessica Evans, director of standards at NSF International, said in a statement.

Green Credibility

As ACA also notes, sustainability guidelines and green certification programs also give preference to those products that have verified EDPs.

For example, it says, the newest version of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system gives more credence to projects that use materials with verifiable EDPs. The federal government also is looking at verified EDPs, ACA says.

The ACA says it will host a series of webinars on the PCR within the next few months.
