Aluminum Foil Cladding Causes Stir

Tarpon Springs, FL--When it comes to improving your home’s facade, some opt for paint; others, for tin foil.

That’s right. A resident in Tarpon Springs, FL, has clad his 1,180-square-foot rental home—including palm trees, mail box, and electric meter—in rolls of aluminum foil.

Artist Piotr Janowski, 53, says he wanted to celebrate his sunny surroundings with a reflective material and push the boundaries of art, according to local news reports.

Not just for leftovers: Aluminum foil provides a shiny, reflective cladding on this Florida home.

His decision to use silvery foil for the “402 Ashland Ave” project, however, is causing some of his neighbors to see red.

‘This is Art’

Code officials, city arborists and his landlord have all received complaint calls.

However, Janowski maintains, “This is art.”

"In their thick, bureaucratic books, I'm sure they have nothing against this,” he told the Tampa Bay Times.

Police Sgt. Ed Miller said code enforcement officials were trying to determine if the outdoor art installation was violating any ordinances, the news bureau reported.

Neighbors Disagree

Some neighbors have not wrapped their heads around the project.

Janowski plastered the aluminum foil to his home using a weak spray-on adhesive, reports relate.

“To me, he is defacing the property,” one neighbor told local NBC affiliate WFLA. “He’s got a piece of art in the garage…that he’s been painting and that should be the canvas.”

Another neighbor told the Tampa Bay Times, "I don't know what the heck that thing is. It's the strangest thing I've ever seen in my life."

Janowski doesn’t seem to mind the critics.

“Bad or good opinion is always good for an artist,” he told Bay News 9.

Alas, Janowski’s landlord has refrained from commenting on the situation, but reports say the chrome home will revert to its regular appearance in about a month.
