SALEM, NH—A homeowner unhappy with a paint job broke into the painter's home and ended up in a knife fight that left the painter with a six-inch wound in his abdomen, police say.

David R. Konze, 38, of Greenland, entered the contractor's home just before 11 p.m. Saturday (May 9) through an unlocked kitchen door, CBS Boston reported.

Salem PD

David Konze has been charged with assault, burglary and other offenses after stabbing a painter in his home.

WMUR, the ABC affiliate, said Konze had confronted the victim in the kitchen. The two argued, and Konze pulled a knife from his pocket, Salem Police Lt. Joel Dolan told the station.

Konze "slashed the victim on the abdomen," Dolan said.

'Not Happy'

Police said Konze had been trying to get his money back from the painter, who had painted his house. The two had argued about the job earlier in the day, Dolan said.

"The suspect was not happy, allegedly not happy with the work that was performed and in the manner in which it was performed," said Dolan. "He was asking for a return on his investment."

"The suspect had been sending several messages during the day to try to retrieve some of the money, and he was told not to bother them anymore," Dolan said.

CBS Boston

Police said Konze had a knife in his pocket when he entered the painter's home (pictured) through an unlocked door and confronted him in the kitchen about 11 p.m. Saturday.

Salem Police Lt. Rob Morin called the incident a "violent physical fight" and a "wild scene."

911 Call

Konze then fled as someone else in the home called 911. Police found Konze in the woods and "a small sheath knife" hanging from a branch nearby, police said..

Konze was charged with burglary, criminal threatening, falsifying physical evidence, and first-degree assault. He spent the weekend in jail and was due in court Monday (May 11).

The victim's identity and condition were not released, although his wound was not believed to be life threatening.

Everyone thinks painting is easy and therefore can be done by anyone, but it takes knowledge to do it right. Ignorant painters cause damage to to homes, especially wood sided, by not understanding how the skin of a home works. That and opting for the easy way instead of the right way is what separates a crap painter from a good one. I've dealt with the best of the best and the worst of the worst and have wanted to kick down the door of more than one unskilled hack. I doubt this customer was just a little too picky about an otherwise excellent paint job. Must have been an embarrassment to the paint industry to insight this much anger.

I like to call this type of painter a trunk slammer. Probably no license either. I have over my career only left customers with a smile and (knock on wood) have never had a call back. Knowing what your doing and pride in my craft has kept me out of harms way. Must admit this homeowner went a tad over board.

NH is the "Live Free or Die" state - no contractor license required. If you don't do your homework you'll get what you pay for.

Too bad this happened - but over the years i have learned that a professional painter is the only way to go! I am an interior designer and have had to work with painters that left a mess - I tell my clients I will stand by only my painters - since I have used them for many years and they stand by their products and work performed. A good painter is not cheap - that old saying you get what you pay for is so true!I feel sorry for the homeowner I am sure he was so frustrated and past his breaking point - just too bad this went so far!

This is a problem across the board with the trades. I do resinous flooring and I have repeatedly had to go back in and repair the floors because the painter said he could install one without a problem and much cheaper than us. Sure you can, that is why I am now here doing this all over and having to deal with a very unhappy customer.
