Architects, designers and other innovators will be able to grow their own bio-based products and building materials under a new offering by Ecovative.

Ecovative “Grow It Yourself,” to roll out in September, is a kit that includes bags of the company's Mushroom Material, which it uses to grow packaging and other products.

The company says it can replicate designs using Mushroom Materials "with a high degree of consistency and quality control."

Currently, the company says, Mushroom Materials are being turned into lampshades, plant holders and a surfboard.

Bricks and More

Architect David Benjamin, of the firm The Living, created bricks using live Mushroom Materials while working on his Hy-Fi towers for MoMA’s Young Architects Program.

Architect David Benjamin used 10,000 Mushroom Material bricks to build the 40-foot tall Hy-Fi towers structure at MoMA.

While building the towers, Benjamin designed and grew the bricks using the company’s Mushroom Materials. He then brought a prototype brick to Ecovative to fine-tune and manufacture the bricks to scale for his project, the company said.

The 40-foot tower took three months and 10,000 bricks, but now stands in the MoMA PS1 courtyard.

It’s the largest structure to date made of Mushroom Materials.

Bringing Materials to Life

Benjamin’s experience with the Mushroom Materials inspired “Grow It Yourself,” the company said.

Ecovative

The "Grow It Yourself" kit includes Mushroom Materials that can be grown in custom designs and shapes.

The company says it wants to “inspire the use of healthy, ultra-rapidly renewable, compostable materials in all kinds of products and projects.”

Like Benjamin, if a customer needs a new product created to scale, Ecovative says it can assist in that process.
