The City of Fort Worth, TX, says it will pay a homeowner $62,500 for its role in a case of mistaken demolition.

Last July, a demolition contractor hired by the city mistakenly razed David Underwood’s three-bedroom home instead of the condemned structure next door.

Fortunately, the house—built in 1951—was vacant at the time of the unexpected leveling. Underwood and his family had planned on moving into the home that had been in the family for years.

Local news channel Fox 4 reported on the mistaken demolition that occurred July 12, 2013.

After the demolition, city officials said that an “employee error” contributed to the incident. Officials reportedly halted demolitions of substandard structures and reviewed their procedures.

Underwood and city officials agreed to a $102,500 settlement last month and the city council voted to approve the settlement Tuesday (April 22).

Taxpayers will pay $62,500 and the remaining $40,000 will be paid by the contractor involved.

City officials have not identified the contractor.
