Federal safety authorities have expanded worker training materials to include a new fall prevention guide with “Toolbox Talks.”

The 24-page “Fall Prevention Training Guide: A Lesson Plan for Employers,” published this month, will help employers and supervisors plan how to prevent worker injuries and fatalities from falls and provide training to employees, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

OSHA's new 24-page guide on fall prevention includes lesson plans for ladder, scaffolding and roofing work safety.

Falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry.

The guide centers on a series of three Toolbox Talks covering ladder safety, scaffolding safety and roofing work safety.

Safety: ‘Short and Direct’

OSHA says that “short and direct” Toolbox Talks can be a “very efficient way to reach workers with health and safety information,” adding that “studies have shown peer-to-peer training is effective, participatory and well-retained.”

Each Toolbox Talk begins with an example of the types of incidents that are possible if workers do not follow fall prevention guidelines.

Falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry. OSHA says "peer-to-peer training" like Toolbox Talks is effective at getting safety messages across.

After the job site example, the training sheet lists guidelines for preventing falls related to the topic (e.g. ladders).

The training sheet also includes blank lines for workers to include ways that the topic is applicable to their job site, according to OSHA.

The publication is available as a PDF, EPUB (most common format for e-Books), and MOBI file format.

Many OSHA publications and training materials are available in English and Spanish, as well as Portuguese, Russian and other languages.
